STRUCTURAL ALTERATIONS
(LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVALS & NEW OPENINGS)
Severn Structural Engineering Ltd can work directly for you as the Client, through an appointed builder or other designer such as an Architect. We work closely with the design team to achieve the most economic and sustainable design within the project parameters.
Removing existing load bearing walls requires the expertise of a Structural Engineer to assess the existing and proposed structure. We provide calculations and detailed drawings of the new support system.
We also provide a survey service to confirm if existing internal walls are load bearing and provide recommendations regarding their removal.
WALL REMOVAL
-
Assessment of existing structure;
-
Review of structural stability;
-
Design of support beams, frames and posts.

NEW OPENINGS
New openings for doors, windows, service hatches etc usually require the design of a new lintel to support the existing structure above.
-
Specification of proprietary steel and concrete lintels;
-
Design of bespoke lintels.
CHIMNEY REMOVAL
It is often stipulated by planning requirements that the chimney stack remains visible from the outside of the property. Internal removal of the chimney at lower level to increase room sizes requires the design of a new support system for the remaining chimney stack. This can often be achieved using simple construction techniques and materials.
